Cory Lemke - Parent/Child Championship
04/10/2007
The World Amateur’s newest competitive entry is as much about the bond between family and golf as it is competition. 2007 will mark the inaugural year of the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship, an event open free of charge to any combination of parent and child participating in the World Amateur.
The event will be played in honor of Cory Lemke, who won his flight at the age of 15 in 2002 and played countless rounds of golf with his father, Mark Lemke, a 12-year tournament participant. Cory tragically lost his life in a 2006 motorcycle accident but his memory lives on through the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship.
“The World Amateur was our favorite tournament,” Mark said. “The Parent-Child Championship means the world to me. It’s such a great honor for my son. The tournament will keep his name alive.”
Unlike nearly every other sport, golf transcends age. The game can be played by the young and old, creating a common ground that draws generations together, and that is the spirit the Cory Lemke Parent-Child Championship will celebrate.
“Golf was everything to us,” Mark said. “I figured long down the road after he was out of high school and college, it was still something we could do together for the rest or our lives. You see guys out playing golf with their dad. It’s something you can enjoy together.”
Registration for the Parent-Child Championship is limited to the first 150 teams. The top 10 teams with the lowest net scores will receive PGA TOUR Superstore gift certificates.
