From picnic tables and hand written leaderboards to upscale meals and computerized scoring, today’s PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship bears little resemblance to the first tournament played in 1984.
The last quarter century has witnessed even greater progress in a more important realm - the fight against prostate cancer.
On August 23, the two causes will intersect as the World Amateur celebrates its first 25 years while helping ensure future progress in the battle against cancer. The first annual “Know Your Score: Fight Prostate Cancer” Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held at 8:00 a.m. on the morning of the 23rd, followed by the World Amateur Handicap Championship 25th Anniversary Gala in the evening.
Best of all, World Amateur participants have a special offer to join the fun and aid the fight against cancer. The star-studded celebrity tournament will be hosted by former baseball All-Star Ken Griffey, Sr. at Long Bay Club. The tournament will include celebrities such as former NBA champion Sam Jones, TNT golf announcer Jim Huber, basketball coach Bobby Cremins and former baseball slugger George Foster, among others.
The 25th Anniversary Gala will honor the World Am’s growth and the people and events that have shaped the tournament. The gala will be highlighted by a performance by nationally renowned comedian Henry Cho, a locker room chat with Griffey, and a silent auction.
