jim herre.jpgWhen Sports Illustrated Golf Group signed on as the title sponsor of the World Amateur Handicap Championship, it brought the name recognition of golf’s most influential media conglomerate – Sports Illustrated, Golf Magazine and Golf.com – to the event.

What makes the SI Golf Group among the sport’s world most prominent media brands is a roster of writers that is as talented as it is deep, and many of them are going to get a participant’s view of the 27th annual Golf.com World Am.

At a press conference at Pine Lakes Country Club, SI’s birthplace, Jim Herre, SIGG’s managing editor, announced plans to have 21 writers at this year’s tournament, allowing the story of the event to be told through the words of some of the nation’s most talented journalists.

The writers covering the Golf.com World Am reads like a “Who’s Who” of golf journalism, including Alan Shipnuck, who recently authored Swinging From My Heels with Christina Kim, Michael Bamberger and Gary Van Sickle, among many others. SIGG’s writers will be embedded in the field, playing tournament rounds and providing a first-hand account of the event from the first tee to the World’s Largest 19th Hole.

SI Golf Group's coverage will include stories, videos, photography and a steady stream of tweets from the organization's staff.

In addition to covering the tournament, SI Golf Group writers will host a “PGA Tour Confidential” round table discussion at the World’s Largest 19th Hole on Wednesday, September 2. The writers will discuss the game’s hottest topics and take questions from the crowd about all things golf.

David Feherty, a Golf Magazine columnist and network golf analyst, joined the press conference via telephone and weighed in on everything from his upcoming appearance at the World Am to the state of Tiger Woods’ game. Feherty will be the World Am’s featured speaker on Thursday, September 2.

SI Golf Group also unveiled a host of supporting sponsors who will enhance the tournament experience for players. Among the sponsors at this year’s tournament are Gosling’s Rum, Negra Modelo, Callaway Golf, PGA Tour Superstore and GolfTEC. Callaway is the World Am’s official ball provider and GolfTEC will be providing players with a free club-fitting.
