Hometown: Greensboro, N.C.

Years Played:
6

Why do you play in the World Am?
I like the length of the event, I like meeting different people, and you pick up right where you left off (with friends from the tournament). I really look forward to seeing people I haven’t seen in a year and catching up about what is going on in their lives – new grandchildren, retirements. All I expect to do is have a good time. Everything else is a bonus.

What is your most memorable story?

My second year at the tournament, (Paula Morton) won a condo. We were behind the stage rooting for her. I really enjoyed seeing Annika (Sorenstam), and I wouldn’t have seen her otherwise. One year I modeled clothes when I was selected as a person that needed a makeover! That was a lot of fun.

What is your favorite part of the 19th Hole?
You get to see people you recognize on the course after they’ve cleaned up nice! I like to play the closest to the pin contest, and I usually win a gift certificate. I really like the entertainment. The drinks aren’t a big deal (to me) but the food is good.

What advice would you give a new player?
Enjoy the competition but don’t take it so seriously that you miss the point, which is meeting new people and enjoying the whole experience. It’s really rewarding to be at the event and if you win it’s a bonus.

Do you still get nervous?
Yes, I do on the first hole. I don’t want to humiliate myself! I just want to hit the ball off the tee.

You played in last year’s event while undergoing chemo therapy, how is your health heading into this year’s tournament?
My health is good, and I’m coming back to play. My hair is back but I didn’t care about that. Cancer isn’t a death sentence, it’s a life sentence. I took a Caribbean cruise in January with my best friend, and it’s a joy to play.

What did it mean to you to play in last year’s event?
It was everything. (Cancer) was bad but the tournament was a reminder of why I went through treatment , so I could be with friends and play (and enjoy life). I figured I could throw up in the woods as well as I could at home.

Great to see your profile on the blog. I admired you for coming to play last year whenever you were not feeling your best and in the greatest challenge of your life. It showed your outstanding attitude and courage. From the first time I met you I saw your love of golf and I met a friend. You are considerate of the game and your competitors. The World Am is like a family reunion and I truly look forwarding to seeing you again this year. God Bless you and the best of luck to you.

Hi Maggie! I too hail from Greensboro, although the Coast Guard has moved me around quite a bit. My mother (still in G'boro) has been battling cancer for a year now. Like you, her spirits are high. Best of luck to you!!!
