Course Assignment Q&A With The Tournament Director
With a little over a month left before the start of the 26th annual PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship, we caught up with tournament director Dave Macpherson for a quick Q&A about one aspect of the event everyone has interest in – course assignments.
How long does it take to complete course assignments?
We start soliciting bids to host the tournament in February, but the process of assigning the courses takes four to five weeks. We compile a list of course assignments from the last two years, then take the courses that are participating in this year’s event and get to work.
What do you try and guarantee each flight?
We try to guarantee them they will play a north-end course, a south-end course and a central course. We try to make sure every flight plays at least one premier course, if not two, and we make sure the flight doesn’t play any courses it has played in the previous two years.
Is it hard to make assignments geographically because everyone in the flight doesn’t stay in the same location?
Yes, but we work under the assumption that a lot of people are staying near 21st Avenue in Myrtle Beach because it’s a central spot and it’s near the 19th Hole. We are taking somewhat of a gamble not knowing where everyone is staying.
Do you take into account the expected level of play in each flight when making course assignments?
Yes. We take into account the level of difficulty of each course and then we try not to pair the more difficult, high-sloped courses with higher handicaps, or we try to make sure there is a set of tees that correspond with the flight’s level of play.
Is there a formula to aid course assignments or do you walk through each assignment manually?
We assign a numeric value to the distance each golf course is from the convention center and we use a tier system to gauge the quality of the golf courses. At the end of the week we try to make sure each flight has a similar average across the board so that each is traveling roughly the same distance and playing roughly the same quality of courses. Otherwise we take pen and paper and begin making assignments.
It’s easy for the first 12 flights but by the time you get to the last flight, a change can affect every other flight in the field. Think about on a normal golf trip, trying to figure out four rounds of golf that will make 12 other people in a group happy. Now you are taking 3,000 people and trying to offer them something that is a good representation of the entire beat.
When you get to the last flight and you think they are perfect and there is one course left and it’s a course that flight has already played, we really do stop the press and start again. We are on our sixth full revision for 2009 and have more work to do.
How important are course assignments to the success of the event?
If the golf courses aren’t the primary reason people come they’re somewhere near the top, so we put a lot of time and effort into doing as good a job as we possibly can. The majority of Myrtle Beach area golf courses host the tournament, something we are grateful for, and we put maximum effort into making sure each flight enjoys its course lineup.
When will course assignments be released?
On August 24 we will send an email letting everyone know they can access their course assignments. If a player is already in the area and doesn’t have access to a computer, they can call 1-800-833-8798, and we will be happy to provide them.

2 years ago, my flight (senior 0-6 hdcp) was playing the courses at a very short length (6100-6300 yards. Why, and should I expect that again???
Last year I had wedgefield in Georgetown on my lineup. Poor choice and way to far to drive.A goat ranch compared to most of the MB courses. I hope you all left this one off the list.I would drop out of the tournement before going there again.Just giving you all feedback .You guys do a great job and keep up the great work.
Thanks,
Frank Julian
I agree with Frank. Wedgewood was a real dog track, too far away, and doesn't meet the standards of the world am. It was my first world am, and was the only blemish on an otherwise terrific experience. You really do a great job, and I think your revisions this year are excellent. Thanks for all your hard work!
Wedgefield will not be hosting this year. Follow the link below for a list of every course that will be hosting:

Player Rivers Edge twice last year. Once for a practice round then found out this was one of my assigned courses. The course was in horrible shape. Although you could tell this was a good track layout the course had had some issues with flooding. One par three near the clubhouse had no grass at all on it. Need to make sure that conditions of course are up to standard.
Zeke
We just talked to one of the head honchos at Rivers Edge not long ago. The course is getting new greens and should be in outstanding condition!
I was wondering why you are waiting until August 24 to release our course assignments. Last year they were released on the 15th.
I would like to play a practice round at each of my assigned course and would need to make tee times in advance and also download them into my sky-caddie and 1 week ahead doesn't give me much time
Thanks
Butch Reed
I agree with Butch Reed. I would also like to be able to play a practice round on the courses I will play and I would also like to load the courses in my GPS before I leave Florida. I realize it is not an easy process but since the courses assignments were out earlier last year, it would be nice if the release date could be moved up a little. You guys do a great job and I appreciate all the work that goes into setting up this tournament as well as the Veteran's Classic that I also play in. Dave, keep up the great work!!
Have you at least assigned specific courses to the different age brackets? i.e., one group of courses for Seniors, one for Mid-Seniors, etc. Or will there be multiple age groups playing on some of the same courses, just using different tee boxes.
As a senior with a low handicap (7), I like what you do with course length. If I establish my handicap in the 6,000-6100 yard course length, I don't want to play a 6,400 yard course during the tournament. I come to have fun and enjoy the week with friends. It is not a club championship.
I have a GARMIN GolfLogix...I can use it once I get the course assignments, right?
Ed
I would love to see course asignments out earlier, before the weekend of aug 22.
Ed,
As long as the Garmin doesn't measure slope or wind, it's ok.
Why do you have to pratice on your assigned courses I thought golf was a sport of skill not advantage. One week for course assignments is sufficent time for those who want to practice on there assigned courses for the tournament. This is my second year playing with many more to follow with GOD's help. I'm a Super Senior this year & I beleive I have a good chance of being flight leader for at least one day. This tournament is the best. Thanks again for ALL the people that put this together.
As a particiapant for the past seven years I was
really disappointed last year in my assigned
handicap. Even though I had a verified legitimate
handicap of 18 and had suffered some serious
health problems, not to mention an advance in age
to 78, I was placed in the 12.5 (r) handicap
bracket probably based on the fact that I had won
my flight 1n 2005. As a result I had very little
to no chance to really compete in my flight.
Currently I am a verified, legitimate GHIN 21
handicap and I certainly hope that I will be
placed in a more realistic flight than I was last
year.
I agree with the fellows regarding the 8/24/09 course assignments. This is a problem for me because my wife and I will be in Mrytle Beach on 8/22/09. Can I obtaine my course assignments if I visit your offices?
Being able to play courses prior to tournament play is GREAT for people that LIVE in the area. But, for myself and many others who make it a vacation we just like the enjoyment of playing tournament golf. I myself, this is the only tournament golf I look forrward to each year, this is my 3rd year and I just kick myself for not starting this earlier.
Tony,
If you can't get online for the assignments, you can always call us at 800-833-8798 and we can provide them to over the phone as well.
like so many others i lived in kentucky for years and south carolina I also like the turniment for the fun of plotting out my stratiges when I get there. Now i live in OMAHA NE. and now it would almost be imposible for me to come down for the terniment any sooner than the week for vacation is ok if the players dont act like they are playing the toure or the course back home and take forever to play 18 holes of golf the slower you go the worst you will play I thank that it should be a timed event. I Didnt ment to be so long winded thanks.
i would comment on jim magnotta comment for seniors.he said he was a 7 hdcp and likes the way you set the courses, short.i disagree big time .this will be my 21 year in a row and i come to compete and my biggest gripe is the courses are way to short.i am not a long ball hitter, but 6000 yards is way to short.i am a 6-or 7 myself and it needs to be a challenge.if you get behind and have a good day you can pick up some shots.get behind and your screwed.i am 64 and if your a 6 or7 you can play decent golf.i get my hdcp at 6300 to 6700 yards.let us compete. thanks jim dupont sr
How can golfers playing on the same flight can find each other so they can share a ride to same golf course ....thanks
We leave from California for other places before arriving at Myrtle. With participation apparently down somewhat this year, we were wondering why the course assignments are to be
published later this year. It would be helpful if the assignments would be available around Aug. 15th as in prior years.
What are the chances of changing the week of this tournament? I had played in this for 6 years. The last 3 years I have been unable to get that week off.
I appreciate the fact that course assignments are released late. No disrespect to our local golfers but you would have a distinct advantage by playing your courses well in advance of the tournament. Speaking for myself, travelling from a great distance only allows me one or two practice rounds on courses and grasses I've never played before.....My thoughts. Can't wait to get down there from Western Canada!!
I am currently working in a pro shop where 3-4 events are put on per week. This will be my first year at the event although I use to have a home in the area. I wish to thank the entire staff for all there effort and hard work it takes to put on a tournament of this magnitude. all my best for a safe and enjoyable event.
This is my 16th year and I have enjoyed every one I have played in. Over the years I have played with a lot of people and have made some friendships that have lasted even today. I look foward to seeing them every year. As long as I am able to play in it I can think of no other thing I would want to do.
Guys i know you have made a change and have decided to to make our course assignments available on the 24th but with 2800 men and women that lead very busy lives with families and jobs it would be thoughtful on the committes part move the assignments back to the weekend of the 15th . Some thought into this would be nice on your part. This is a great event and the hard work and commitment is very much appreciated.
Chris
As of today's date I haven't seen your comment or answer as to why the course assignments won't be released until the 24th. It seems that they are several other participant's that are curious also.
Thanks
Butch
I agree.....Great job, but earlier course assignments would certainly be good....
Butch - This is a bit lengthy so please hang with me. As you know, in the past we typically posted scores a week earlier than we are this year. We
would post the assignments, and then over the next few weeks we would take a very large amount (nearly 1,000) changes because of index changes from folks updating during the month, which would then move a large mass of people from their current flight (and golf courses) to a different one. Many times, this approach would cause a flight to go from 112 players, to 130, and then
another flight would go from 112, to 97.
With the guarantee to not exceed 96 players /course, and keep flight counts as close to 48 as possible, we can't afford to have the above "flight changes" to happen. The minute a flight that we put 90 players in goes to 106 because of changes, we lose. Furthermore, if we set flights at roughly 48, and then take all the changes after, some flights could have 60+ players
and other below 40. That wouldn't be fair either.
With that said, August 21st is the last date the majority of the country will have a handicap index update before the start of the event. Following the 21st, our staff will have Saturday to flight, and then post the assignments on Sunday night and or Monday morning. If we do that, we ensure a limited amount of movement, because all index updates will have taken
place prior to the fligthing process.
As you can see by the above turnaround time, our staff loses some work time on getting these done too, but it is the only way to accomplish the lower course count, something that the majority of past players tell us needs to be improved.
Hope this answers your question. Thank you for following up.
Thanks,
Dave M
This is my first year and I can't wait hope everything goes well
I was wondering why HC were to take place after Aug. 1. I can understand this as I have changed flights in the past and had extra players come into my flights at times. I say, good job. I probably would have changed flights this time as my HC dropped a couple August 1st. I look forward to not having 115 players in my flight.
I'll be staying at Barefoot Resort and am looking for car pooling information for my flight. When the course assignments come out on the 24th, I'd like to get in touch with people in my flight to see if they'd be interested in car pooling too. My wife is coming with me to the tournament and she doesn't want to get up every morning at 6am to drive to the courses with me and then return to pick me up. Can we get some car pooling info going once flights assignments and golf courses are announced? Thanks.
hows about a flight 75 and up. can't play with the young bucks. spanky
Hey Chris,,, Your not going to make us 15 hc in the 50-60 group play anymore 465 yards par 4's holes this year are you .,.
We are traveling from Texas and would not be able to play any practice rounds even if the course assignments were available. Seems like an equitable way to do this.
We are bringing our RV and will be at the Myrtle Beach State Park--- anyone staying there might want to carpool?
This is my first year and it has been on my senior "BUCKET LIST". FUN FOR EVERYONE AND GOOD LUCK.
we are playing founders club ,,,,which one are we at ,,payleys island or st james plantation ,,thank you
I am in Flight 3 and playing Arrowhead on Thursday. Which courses are we playing as Arrowhead has 3 nines?
