Course Assignment Q&A With The Tournament Director
With a little over a month left before the start of the 26th annual PGA TOUR Superstore World Amateur Handicap Championship, we caught up with tournament director Dave Macpherson for a quick Q&A about one aspect of the event everyone has interest in – course assignments.
How long does it take to complete course assignments?
We start soliciting bids to host the tournament in February, but the process of assigning the courses takes four to five weeks. We compile a list of course assignments from the last two years, then take the courses that are participating in this year’s event and get to work.
2009 World Am Restaurants Unveiled
The World’s Largest 19th Hole has a lot to offer World Amateur participants, but little supersedes the importance of food. A long day on the golf course creates an appetite, and Myrtle Beach’s best restaurants will curb that hunger at the 19th Hole.
Ruth’s Chris, Tommy Bahamas and Rioz are a just a few of the high-end eateries that will be serving food at this year’s tournament. Everything from classic American faire to Italian, Thai and Mexican food will be on the World Am menu. Checkout the list of restaurants that have committed to serve food at this year’s tournament (please continue checking back because this list will grow in the coming days).
D.J. Gregory Brings Inspiring Story To World Am
For many, golf is a game of birdies, pars and bogies, but focusing on score alone obscures the game’s true beauty – its ability to challenge and inspire its devotees. For some players that challenge might be in breaking par, but for D.J. Gregory every trip to the course is a testament to his will
Born with cerebral palsy, Gregory’s parents were told D.J. would never walk. He was born 10 weeks premature, and by the time he entered first grade he had undergone five surgeries to untangle his legs.
But Gregory never worried about the impossible, focusing instead on what was possible.
Could you be part of Matty G's next ambush?

Over the years, the World Amateur has attracted coverage from some of the nation’s leading media outlets, and this year golf’s leading travel writer is planning to attend the tournament and participate in one of the nightly Q&A sessions at the World’s Largest 19th Hole.
Golf Digest’s Matt Ginella, better known as Matty G, will be at this year’s event. Ginella, Golf Digest’s senior travel editor, is the author of the popular “Where’s Matty G” blog, which chronicles his travels. Ginella has popularized the “ambush,” surprising one group of golfers each month and covering their golf trip.
The trip to the World Amateur won’t be Ginella’s first to Myrtle Beach. He covered the area for a Golf Digest story last year and has covered the Grand Strand in his blog.
