Dunes Club To Host World Championship Playoff
Sure, the World Amateur is all about a good time, camaraderie and the opportunity to compete like a pro for 72 holes. But everyone that registers for the tournament dreams of advancing to Friday’s World Championship Playoff, an 18-hole shootout that crowns that tournament’s champion.
In 2009, the world champion will again be crowned at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club, Myrtle Beach’s most revered course. A Robert Trent Jones design, the Dunes Club is a member of every substantive list of America’s Top 100 public courses.
“We are thrilled to be going back to the Dunes Club,” World Amateur tournament director Dave Macpherson said. “Some of golf’s greatest champions have played at the Dunes Club over the years, and it’s the perfect venue for the World Amateur to crown its winner.
Built just yards from the Atlantic Ocean, the Dunes Club is chocked full of history. The course has hosted the Senior Tour Championship, the U.S. Women’s Open, the finals of the PGA Tour’s Q-School and several prominent amateur tournaments.
A 4.5-star course, according to Golf Digest’s prestigious “Best Places to Play” guide, the Dunes Club is a traditional golf course and one of the Myrtle Beach area’s most popular layouts.

I have been fortunate to play the Dunes on Friday durning for the championship many years ago. I still remember the course and many of the shots I made that day. The most impressive thing that I remember was, as I step up on to the tee box on the first tee box and having my name announced and looking down the fairway hoping that I would not hit it to the pond in front of the first tee as one of my playing partners did. After the round my wife told me that the pro that followed our group had said to her while I hit my second shot over the water on #13. She said the pro told her that I should play it safe and hit it down the fairway and go for the green on my third shot not to attempt to go over the water because he had seen to many pro's not make it. Well this day I was lucky enough to make it over and have a 50 yard shot to the pin. I am glad to hear that your are staying at the Dunes because I think this is where a championship needs to be played and reward the winners of each flight.
I was fortunate to have played on Friday at the Dunes with my brother as part of the International Team competition. This round was one of my greatest golf experiences. Knowing that you are competing on the same tournament course as a Nicklaus, Palmer, and Trevino is very neat! And the approach shot on the 18th hole is something else! This memory keeps me coming back!
this will be my 5th or 6th trip to the tournament and i have been placed 10th,6th and choked going into the last round another year tied for first and shot a 92. not good in the first flight. two or three years ago i think i was 16th. i am moving up to the 50 and over womens flight this year, turning 50 in january of this year. so this will be another different experience for me. i have always met great women at these tournaments from all over and even though i have not performed like i would like it is still a great experience. what ever happens happens. every day is so different in golf. and every course we play is different. so maybe my game will go with each course on that given day.
My fondest memory of The Dunes was in 1996 watching my daughter Tami compete in the same foursome as the winner Jerry Berghauser. It was absolutely amazing, Tami incurred 6 penalty/lost ball shots and that is the margin she finished behind Jerry. Jerry's performance was equally amazing. He PUTTED from EVERYWHERE, it seemed sometimes even 30 yards off of the green. A truly memorable day!
it is always a great experience to be able to compete even if you dont win . winning is great but competing is the best . have always had a great time . my boys and myself . i am in the super seniors age 69 and my boys are 44 and 46 repectfully . hope to compete many more years dwc
I played at The Dunes a few years back as a flight winner. All I can say is ''WOW''. A beautiful layout, very fair, yet challenging. An experience I will always remember. Having your name called on the first tee is awesome. Great venue for flight winners playoff. Keep going strong World Am !!
