Tournament Director Q&A - Your Questions Answered

At the end of the day, sportsmanship is paramount.jpg

In the wake of the format changes to the 2009 World Amateur Handicap Championship, there were several recurring questions. To help clear up any potential confusion, World Am tournament director Dave Macpherson answers your most frequently asked questions.

Will players still be able to request to play in the same flight with a friend?
Yes. Just as in years past, players will have the ability to request to play with a friend. The request has to be made on a player’s handicap verification, and if two players want to be flighted together, the player with the higher handicap will have to play down to that of the player he/she requested to play with. The tournament doesn’t guarantee individual pairings.

Do two flights per course mean one flight plays in the a.m. and the other in the p.m.?
No. All flights will tee off in the morning with a shotgun start at either 8:30 or 9:30 a.m. There will be no scheduled afternoon start times.

How are threesomes going to improve pace of play?
With foursomes last year, we had an average of 30-32 groups on the golf course at given time.  The number of groups on each course will remain unchanged, but given that three people should play a hole faster than four, pace of play should improve. We will evaluate pace of play to determine if the move to threesomes has the desired effect.

In addition to the reduction in group size, it’s incumbent upon each player to be responsible for his or her pace of play.

With the adjustment of the player count in each flight, will there be a corresponding adjustment in the number of places paid?

Yes. In years past, 10 percent of each flight was awarded a trophy and a gift certificate, and that will again be the case. But instead of 10 people receiving a gift certificate in a 100-person flight, five people will receive the certificate in a 48-person flight. The number of people honored and gift cards given out – more than $130,000 - won’t change but the numbers in each flight will.

What will be the hours and location of registration at the two PGA TOUR Superstores?

The exact hours of registration have yet to be determined, but it will take place in the PGA TOUR Superstores in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach. You will be notified as to where you should register prior to arriving in Myrtle Beach for the event.

We are traveling as a group of three, driving and staying together, in order for us to be together can I just list both names for playing in the same flight? thanks for all you do.

My comment is in regards to where I will be told to register. The World AM asks each participant where they will be staying and will hopefully use this information when making the determination where that golfer will need to go to register. For instance if I'm staying south of the airport then I really don't want to go to the Martins in North Myrtle, but I would because I want to play.

How will the decrease from 4 person group to 3 person group affect the number of golf carts. It would appear that more would be needed. While one cart in a threesome will be underutilized.

i have not played golf since the 2007 world am. i would like to come back but will not be able to play at the same handicap. i understand the need for fair play is but as i read the handicap info. my last participation will determine my current handicap. i plan to start playing in June. to use my 2007 handicap doesn't seem to provide a level playing field. please comment.

Sirs: I know it is necessary to record a handicap to qualify for this event. However, I do not belong to a country club, and would like to know how this would be possible for me acquire an "offical" handicap. Please advise. Sincerly Frank Melnyk.

Great question.

For those who don't belong to a club, there are websites that can provide you with a USGA approved handicap. One of our favorites is
www.myscorecard.com

Todd-
There will be a spot on the handicap forms (sent out in July) for you to fill in play togethers. All 3 of you will need to fill them out with the other two names on the form. We don't guarantee groupings, just that you will be at the same courses. As long as you get your forms in by the deadline you should be all set. We will not take requests after the handicap deadline.
Thanks
Kerri

As a newbie, a couple of quick questions. When will an individual know which courses they will be playing? Are certain groups assigned the premiere courses and if so how does one sign up for those?

Do you know have a list of preferred housing or recommendations beyond what is on the website, e.g., a blog from past participants of what works?

Does the 19th-hole food and drinks come free as part of the entry fee?

Kerri Donohoe said:

Joe-
We typically post course assignments about 2 weeks before the event. No certain group is assigned the "premier" courses, we have a mix in each flight, with the hope that everyone will play at least one of our top tiered courses.

You can ask for player recommendations on our bulletin board worldambulletinboard.com

As part of your entry fee you will receive a pass for both you and a guest to enjoy all the nightly activities at the 19th Hole- including the food and drinks.
Thanks
Kerri

I have registered to play and would like you to change my email address to bookeith@gmail.com rather than yahoo. Also my son is going to register and we would like to play in the same flight.

Thanks

Hi!
I noticed that you have had some requests for 3 "buddies" to play together in the same group. Hopefully this will not be allowed, as buddies are more apt to overlook some rules violations.
Thanks
Butch

Per entry form, it requires you play in 2 tournaments during the year...What if your not a tournament player and just play at your club with a registered USGA handicap?..thanks..Bobby

I have played in this tournament for the past 12 or 13 years and have enjoyed it greatly. I am looking forward to the new changes to the tournament, in particular, 48 in each flight. It means more flight winners, more chances for everyone etc. I think this is a step in the right direction. I do, however, also feel that 96 at each course is still going to be a few too many. That's 24 foursomes and 18 holes. I feel that some of the slow play is from players taking it seriously and being more deliberate, but mostly because there are more golfers than golf holes. I applaud the tournament officials for listening to the players and at least trying to make subtle changes to get the golf rounds completed in a timely manner. See you in August.

Jim-
You will need to request to play in the same flight as your son, on the handicap forms sent out in July. I will make the change to your email address, but all info changes can be sent directly to wahc@golfholiday.com.

Butch-
Buddies are not allowed to request to play in the same group- but they can request to play in the same flight, like always.

Bobby-
We ask for two tournament scores from new players to get an idea of what you play like in actual tournament conditions. If you are unable to post 2 tournament scores, the handicap committee will slightly reduce your verified index.

Thanks
Kerri

Will range finders and GPS unit be allowed. At my home club we have about 4 or five who used during Saturday Dogfights and pace of play has slowed so much it's almost unbearable. If a course didn't have some type of distance marker, they may could help, however if you have two people in a threesome using these is every group the pace will slow way down. I witnesses this myself in a 15 to 20 man dogfight I can't image how slow it would be with 50.

We are a group of 12 to 15 golfing friends from Hyderabad (India) wanting to play at this tournament this year. We belong to golf clubs in our city that do not have USGA slope-rating for the courses and USGA handicaping system. Kindly advise us on how we get the our Handicap and participate in the World Am Golf Tournament.

Thanks & Regards,

Ramana Reddy

I would like you to explain how the new format will speed up play. The way I figure is there will be aprox. 32 threesomes at each golf course. This means that there will be double stacked tee boxes on all but 4 holes. I play several tourneys a year and double stacked tees usually slow the play down. Maybe I'm just not seeing the whole picture. Maybe you could explain your thoughts on this. thanks

Chris King Author Profile Page said:

Donnie,

In theory groups of three should play faster than groups of four, hence an improvement in pace of play. We certainly respect the fact you play in several tournaments a year but the research that was used to make this decision was based on an evaluation of literally hundreds of tournaments run by multiple golf associations.

We will evaluate the results at the conclusions of the tournament and go from there.

Thanks.

Jim Christiansen said:

In order to maintain a decent pace of play has the committee considered placing a time limit for an individual golfer to make their stroke once their turn to play comes up? For example a tourney on the west coast uses 40 seconds for a player to complete their stroke. In 2007 I played in a foursome where one player took an exceptional long time on every shot including putts and a course marshall could have timed the player and warned the player rather than chastising the foursome for slow play. If the player did not heed the warning the marshall could have penalized the player for slow play in accordance with the rules.

I'm not convinced that playing in 3-somes is a good strategy.

It will not improve the pace of play if we get rain and it becomes cart path only. The person in a cart by themselves will have to do an awful lot of work on their own in terms of cart management.

Also, playing in 3-somes removes some of the camaraderie of the event. Again, that person in a cart by themselves has no one to commiserate with!

And though I'm sure there's never any cheating going on, there's more potential for it to occur in a 3-some (rather than a 4-some).

I will not be playing this year and will miss it tremendously...but last year my flight was basicly forced to play in a downpour with lightning and thunder in close vacinity...that should be a no no as even the pros will not do that. Also, the method of using past scores in the World Am to establish this year handicap does not take in consideration addition age, illness, etc that sends a players local handicap sky high.
That should be looked at...hopefully before next year when I plan to return. thanks for listening

Will I be playing with the same two peaple each day or with different folks that are in my flight?

I saw questions/comments concerning when the tournament is played...I voted for the months of April or May...From August 1st to the end of October is hurricane season...You never know when a hurricane or tropical storm will hit, but grant you, these are the most vunerable months...I hope consideration is given to moving in the spring, not only for a good chance of a rainless tournament, but to protect life...Bobby
