The National Father & Son Team Classic is a golf experience that has been held for over a decade. It is an exciting way to experience great golf courses and to spend time with the family. The event includes a competition for 54 holes of four-ball stroke play, Pinehurst Scotch and 2-Man Select Shot. While the father & son classic encourages all fathers and sons to participate, it is not limited to only this relationship. Any combination of father/son type relationships is allowed. This includes uncles and nephews, father and son in-laws, and grandparents with their grandchildren. This is a great way to spend time with different family members and to compete against others as a team. Held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, the even offers great weather, courses, and activities for the entire family to participate in.

The event for 2009 will be held on July 16-18, with online registration closed as of June 26th, 2009. However, registration is available on Wednesday, July 15 from 8 am to 5 pm at Martin’s PGA Tour Superstore in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. But be quick to register, as only the first 800 teams to register are allowed to participate in the event. A variety of beautiful courses are used in the team classic including Barefoot Resort, Crow Creek, Farmstead Golf Links, Grande Dunes, Indian Wells Golf Club, legends Resorts, Myrtlewood, Pine Lakes, River Hills, Thistle Golf Club, Tidewater, and Wachesaw Plantations East. With this variety of golf courses and scenery, you will find any sort of golfing environment that you enjoy. The time spent enjoying golf with someone that you are close to certainly makes the entry fee of $1175 per team ($950 for returning teams) worth it. In addition, each player in the event will receive a $200 Martin’s gift certificate.

The Classic date back eleven years, to 1998 and has been held to much fanfare each year since. Although the Classic has 54 holes of enjoyable family golf, there are a variety of activities for the time away from the course. This includes 16 restaurants, many boutiques and specialty shoes, an IMAX theater, and nightclub district just minutes away. With the event being held in Myrtle Beach, you can take advantage of all the area has to offer. Some of the popular activities include surfing, sailing, and scuba diving, just for starters. In 2008, the event included players from 44 states and 8 international countries. A large number of father/son combinations will be enjoying the event again this year, as 800 teams are allowed to participate.

With such an enjoyable time at the golf course, the competition portion may be easily forgotten. But the event is very competitive and the tournament committee goes to great lengths to ensure the integrity of the event. As such, teams are reviewed to ensure that the proper handicap is being used for scoring purposes. Practice rounds are available prior to the event by calling any of the participating courses and scheduling a round. The Father & Son classic has a rich history that is likely to continue on for a long time and is a great way to spend time with someone close to you.
